Where to?

I have a few more legal days here at Fortuna Pond. We haven't seen a Forest Service ranger since we've been here, so I might get away with staying longer than the allotted fourteen days.

But then what? What's the big picture for the next several months? Less zigging, zagging and backtracking than last year. I hope. Okay, but where do I want to be?

The only definite commitment is to be in Los Angeles on February 28. I have tickets to a live performance of "The White Album." That means drifting from Yuma to LA over the next month. From there I could spend the spring working my way up the coast and the summer hopscotching down the Sierras. However, California is very short on free camping spots. And everything costs more.

An alternative would be getting another New Mexico State Parks annual pass, spending more time there and then heading up into Colorado.

Maybe a week or two in Mexico before going to Los Angeles.

Maybe more time in Arizona then on to Utah.

Maybe an Arizona-New Mexico-Colorado-Utah-Arizona loop.

I don't know.

Even without needing to be in LA, heat would eventually drive me out of the southern desert.

I have a month to figure it out.

  1. For Cali maybe you could go into stealth parking mode. But I suppose it's the dirtywork of vandwelling. If it is, then why am I doing it? Well, it's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it!

  2. Baja is proving to be quite lovely. We're in San Felipe on the Sea of Cortez where we headed after the rtr. It's a sleepy little village with great food!

    1. San Felipe is on my list. Where are you camping there?

  3. We're camped at a place called Rueben's. It's seen way better days. There's a place called Pete's camp about 8 miles south of San Felipe that's right on the beach and a lot nicer I hear. I've got some pics on the blog and on facebook.

  4. We crossed at algodones, no problems. Some of us are leaving in the morning and crossing in Mexicali because we heard it will be faster and the road better. The road from algodones wasn't so bad, a little bumpy at first. CB is staying another week. You need Mexican car ins. I paid around $80 for 2 weeks.

  5. My inclination would be to avoid the ports of entry in larger towns/cities because of the volume of traffic. Maybe Mexicali/Calexico is set up to handle it. I don't know. It can't be as bad as Tijuana. I'd like to know how it goes for those who went that way.

  6. Whose stupid idea was it to cross at Mexicali on Sat. afternoon? It took 2+ hours to get through. Not worth the "better" road in my opinion.
