My friend Forrest is the caretaker for a 2,200 acre ranch in the San Juan mountains of southwest Colorado. The owners are in the East and rarely come here. He invited me to visit. This is the view from the house.
At dusk the elk come down to drink. There were about 30 of them this time.
I'll bet the RST likes it there Alot!
ReplyDeleteLooks *heavily* overgrazed. Is that due to prev ownership?
ReplyDeletethe water level is low and the area around where stock waters always gets lots of grazing animals hanging around which is why it becomes locally over grazed. That is not an accurate indicator of an overgrazed range. Kind of like how the floor in front of the fridge gets more dirt and wear and tear.
DeleteThere's no livestock here, just wild animals.
DeleteIn this instance, I think it's more a case of the elk trampling the grass by the lake.
DeleteI just cleaned under and in front of frig. Great minds think alike.
ReplyDeleteSheep are by far the worst for the range, they shave the grasses to ground level, and rip out the roots. The true range maggots.
