Mid 70s, mostly sunny, low humidity... This is the winter weather that sells desert real estate. I'd be foolish to leave it in my rear view mirror. Besides, my friends are here.
Meanwhile, the Texas coast forecast looks like this.
Similar daytime temperatures, warmer nights, a little cloudier, maybe some showers, higher humidity. But it will get oppressively swampy before long. Now is sort of a weather sweet spot for that region. Go now or wait until autumn.
I know, I know. The Texas trip is mostly about seeing new places, experiencing new things. And the joy of being on the move. So I'll go. But maybe a few days later. That's what's handy about not needing campground reservations. I'm not locked in.
"oppressively swampy" Deal killer...
ReplyDeleteExactly. I was just down there visitin' my people for the holidays. There were some pleasant days, but it was hard to sleep comfy on the swampy days.
DeleteMy plan for Texas is to take not just one but two winter seasons to tour. Between Van Horn and Del Rio you can spend an easy two months.
ReplyDeleteTo the west of big bend NP there is a Texas state park equal in size that has backcountry camping with 2wd accessibility.
I drove through Big Bend Ranch State Park a couple of years ago, from west to east along the Rio Grande. I'll be going back.
DeleteThere is 20X+ more land just to the north of the river but the only access point is in the west so you have to double back. Three vehicles can share one site for $8/day.
