Shoo, fly! Don't bother me!

You know it’s fly season when all the stores are sold out of flying insect spray. And fly traps. And swatters. And zappers.

They’ve been driving me nuts. No matter how many I execute there are always more. (Why can’t it be the flies that are dying off instead of the honey bees?)

I don’t understand why flies congregate in the Rolling Steel Tent. There’s not anything here for them except a cranky old man who’ll try to kill them. And he doesn’t taste good, even by fly standards.

Meanwhile, about a hundred yards away, there’s a pasture filled with nice, fresh, warm-from-the-cow dung like Mama used to make. It’s an all-you-can-eat buffet over there. It’s free! Go get it!

But there’s no reasoning with flies. I think their diet of poo has addled their tiny brains. So I’ve had to take extreme measures. I bought a screened room, a Clam.

The non-rolling, non-steel tent

I don’t know whether I’ll be schlepping the Clam around when i travel. It takes up a bit of room in the van. And when you get a screened room, the next thing you know you’ve somehow acquired a rug and furniture and fairy lights and the other “necessities” of outdoor living to haul around too.

  2. Yup, that screen tent is the beginning of a slippery slope. I hope you don't wind up sliding down it. We once camped near a guy who had a couple huge stacks of bins he removed from his van and put under a tree while camped. He was not nearly as mobile and you and I like to be.

  3. Do you feel somewhat coolish when sitting in the Clam in direct sunlight?

    1. I don't know yet. As you can see, it's set up between some trees and the day was cloudy, so there wasn't much direct sunlight. The top is solid, though. And there are optional solid side panels that can be attached to block sun and wind. I didn't get those.

  4. The Clam arrived Friday and I spent some time in it. But today, Saturday, it has been raining on and off. Drat. I mean, hurray for the much needed rain, but it's not sittin' outside weather.

  5. I have the green model 6x6 for east coast use with the 3 side panels plus a tarp to cover the roof and front door plus the 6x9 plastic carpet for a floor. My clam rides velcroid to the roof rack.

  7. "A lady once offered me a mat, but as I had no room to spare within the house, nor time to spare within or without to shake it, I declined it, preferring to wipe my feet on the sod before my door. It is best to avoid the beginnings of evil." — Thoreau

But then, she didn't offer him something to keep out the flies. Or in his case up in Concord, Mass., the mosquitoes.
