Loaded up

With inflation, deportation of farm and food processing labor, and uncertainty about Social Security, I’ve been stocking up on food. A section of my floor that used to contain only my quilt in a duffle bag is now filled with containers of nonperishable food. Plus there’s more in the cupboard. Rice, lentils, oatmeal, ramen, soup, chili, peanut butter, dried fruit, canned meats, canned veggies…

Food, fuel, phone and insurance are my main expenses. I have some money in savings, and I have a little over a week to see whether April’s Social Security gets deposited. Once I get to the Pacific Northwest I won’t be doing much driving until late autumn. I might need to find some type of job.

Yes, anxiety is high, things are uncertain. I try (with some success) to stay calm and positive. And I wish the best for the rest of you.

  1. I've pulled all money into cash. Shouldn't be long until the runs on the banks start.

    1. I'm thinking of doing the same, even though my SS is auto-deposited.

  2. For what it's worth, our last two SS checks have come in right on time.

  3. I just bought 3 months of food a couple weeks ago. Not much variety, just a bunch of rice, peanut butter, canned chicken, powdered milk, and oil. Boring and probably short in some micronutrients, but it'll keep me fed.

  4. Hopeful thoughts to you as well. My understanding is those who are already enrolled (S.S.) will be ok. For now. The most effort being made is to make those not yet enrolled discouraged by forcing them to jump through so many hoops and delays. Nothing going on now has any brain cell usage.

Your foresightedness shows you have much more bandwidth, synapse wise, than most. I keep expecting to see the scantness of products much like during Covid. Perhaps because this locale has some buffers or maybe just ostrich syndrome, folks just keep on truckin'.

I'm still so confounded and flabbergasted. This entire shitshow was highly predictable several years ago. I just keep wondering what more or different I could have done to manifest a different outcome.

    1. I suspect they'll cut the amount we who already receive SS will get.
