Smooth move

My mind was somewhere far from the details of driving as I pulled out of the gas station and onto a short connector street between two main thoroughfares. I was in the middle of a left turn when I realized the median was a low concrete island, not just lines painted on the street. The edges were slanted, making it harder to tell it was there but easier to drive over. Which was totally illegal. Especially when done in front of a cop.

Doh.

The officer cited me for failing to yield to oncoming traffic (him) instead of an illegal turn and being a numbskull. Smaller fine. He was a nice enough guy.

With all the driving I do, I’m a little surprised this hasn’t happened before. Several times.

  1. Similar incident the other day...

Just north of Bernalillo on 550 I made a u-turn. The cop parked at the side of the road came after me; I wondered why. Turns out there was a left turn arrow at that intersection. I never saw it....and he believed me.

Is our eyesight failing? What'll we do when it does?

  2. Have any of you folks ever had any problems with repeated pull-overs on AZ I40? That was a $360 three stops section of freeway for me once. Sports car with out of state plates. Young, single gal driving. Easy money. Yeah, still bitter. Colorado to California and back. Passed other staties that didn't feel the need. Maybe now that I'm older (have the time and education to make a court appeal), they won't take the time to meet me.

    1. The question, though, is when to start counting. Was having cancer last year one, two or three?

  4. It's hard to figure when you can't see it coming. I quit chemo, got nothing coming. I'm OK with that. NM is strapped for cash now, watch your mirrors, and your intuitions.
