I haven't tried running ads on this blog. One reason is that I know I don't have that many readers. Another is that the ads are usually for things I wouldn't recommend, or from companies I don't approve of. But, you know, there's the possibility of a few bucks. Money is good. But so is not selling out.
So, what do my readers think? Yes? No? Doesn't matter?
Ads wouldn't deter me as a reader. I say do whatever works for you.
ReplyDeleteWhat ads? https://www.ghostery.com/
ReplyDeleteDoesn't bother me one way or the other. If you start feeling like you have to blog because otherwise you might loose a reader who might make you some money, then it might be a problem.

ReplyDeleteDon't really need to delve deeper than that.
In my experience with online sales, affiliate income is hard to make without a lot of traffic a website or blog. If you wanted to gear your ads to things you use, have bought or like then an Amazon affiliate might work.
ReplyDeleteLike Shadowmoss said, if you feel you have to blog to keep customers and make money it might be a problem. I read a blog just this week where the author chose to leave a great campsite by their own admission because it didn't have an internet signal and they needed that to blog and to keep affiliate income coming in. Interesting because I thought the traveling was more important. I can sit here in my sticksnbricks and do that ... why travel?
I enjoy your blog and if ads help defray the costs, that would seem to be a benefit. As for whether you would be seen as promoting the products, so many seem to be based on cookies, unless everyone wants the same things I have recently shopped for on Amazon! Ask yourself what would Chet do, ha!
ReplyDeleteChet would smuggle heroin.
DeleteHi Al,
ReplyDeleteIt does not matter to me either way, I'd still read your blog. :)
Tina
I prefer no ads but that may because I never read them anyway. I find it quite easy to skip over them on other blogs I read. The idea of promoting products I don't support gives me the willies but I don't need the income from ads. YMMV.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I like no adds. But it's your blog and this is the good old USA, so if you feel you can make a buck and here and there with a clean conscience, then go for it. I'm not a blogger, so I don't know if you can choose which adds show up or not. I wouldn't want things I don't condone to show up on my blog, if I had one.
ReplyDeleteGo for it.
ReplyDeleteYou can get Amazon affiliate income from posting links to products you DO endorse or can recommend --tho I seem to have read that you shed items more than you acquire them. Bob and RVSue both do that. (RVSue having mentioned she cannot be without internet per an above comment, but I also suspect, in her case, she dislikes being out of touch with her readers for more than a couple of days more than she misses the income.) An Amazon search box can allow you to get a percentage of whatever anyone who uses the box buys.
ReplyDeleteI do know that most free blog support platforms have rules against monetizing the site -- RVSue had to switch to a commercial site when she monetized hers.
Ads don't bother me, but then I use an ad blocker (which also saves data transfer when I"m using my mobile hotspot).
Hey I'm with them up-there..If it makes some $$ for you...I enjoy your blog...I have my own ad blocker...Older eyes....
ReplyDeleteRock-on!!!

You already practice living your life for you so follow your gut. I'll bet it rarely steers you wrong. Speaking for me, I enjoy your travels, imagination, and wit and would not be bothered by ads.
ReplyDeleteI'm OK with ads.
