Which way did I end up going?

Hint: I’m writing this in a rest stop outside Reno.

So I chose south instead of north. I spent last night in a patch of National Forest near Alturas, California. Then, as the sun was rising, I headed south and a little east, into Nevada.

Since the highway I was on is so lightly traveled, neither California or Nevada bothered to denote the state line, so I don’t which state I was in (other than a state of contentment) when I encountered this cattle drive. Moments before I shot this video, about half the herd had slipped into the pasture in the background, but a pair of dogs rounded them up.

There were two reason for taking this route. One was to avoid some wild fires, one of which was right next to US 395. The other was to go to the Burning Man site—even though there’s no gathering this year. Hell, I went because there’s no gathering. I had the whole place to myself. No traffic, no need to be hip. I could pretend I was the Burning Man, but without the unpleasantness of actually being on fire. Or the incessant pounding of EDM.

  1. For the past 20-some years, every year, I think to myself this year I'm going to BM. Then a few months later, I start to think about the heat, the dust and the wind, and these days, the costs. And then I think, next year. For sure I'm gonna do it next year.

  2. I think with the heat out there this time of year you could be considered a burning man.

    1. I got there early enough for the heat to be bearable.

  3. The campground up Kingston canyon has no mosquitos. The one beyond Spencer hotsprings by toquima cave is primo but no water.

    1. I doubt I'll be going through that part of Nevada this time around, but I'll keep it in mind for the future.

  4. I would'a bet you'd head north and up for cooler temps....Perfect example why I don't go to Nevada casinos, except for the ladies..Many years ago....and when the BJ tables went from 1 deck to 2 decks..to 4..They musta been not making too much $$$?...It's HOT everywhere..
    Travel on!

  5. Got a kiddie pool for the pups next door. They prefer the sprinkler. I ended up in the pool. If anyone delivers umbrella drinks, this could really work.

Sat on pickup tailgate the other day and BAM, both cables snapped! Is 28 years a good run or did I pack on the pounds this spring? Of course ya cant just go get new cables at the auto store. The whole tailgate assembly has to be taken apart and all new brackets installed. So, I'll put it all back together and let my auto shop fix it. I finally have accepted I'm at the age where I don't have to feel guilty about someone else doing stuff for me. How liberating.
