Box Canyon Dam campground, just north of Ione, Washington, is sort of an odd place. Sure, why shouldn't the county provide a campground, picnic area and swimming pond just downstream from a hydroelectric dam? And why not make it free?
It being Labor Day weekend and all, I figured the typical campgrounds and popular boondocking areas would be full, so Box Canyon Dam campground seemed sufficiently off the beaten track and quirky enough to not be on many people's list. There was still room when I arrived shortly before noon. I discovered there was a small waterfall at the edge of my site. Nice.
